Individual psychotherapy focuses on the individual patient in order to provide a clearer understanding of the individual's concerns and to work towards accomplishing their desired goals. The benefit to participating in individual psychotherapy is the ability to enhance personal growth by gaining insight into your personal concerns, clarifying your goals and values and improving your coping skills. Often times, change involves an extensive process and can trigger intense feelings, such as frustration. However, your effort, in and out of session, has a significant impact on your progress. Thus, it is encouraged that you maintain an open discussion about your progress within your sessions. The balance between short-term relief and long-term care is determined by collaboration between each client and the therapist.

Therapy helps children and adolescents in a variety of ways. They receive emotional support, resolve conflicts with people, understand feelings and problems, and try out new solutions to old problems. Goals for therapy may be specific (change in behavior, improved relations with friends or family), or more general (less anxiety, better self-esteem). The length of therapy depends on the complexity and severity of problems. Therapy is often used in combination with other treatments (behavior management, or working with the school). The relationship that develops between the therapist and the client is very important. The child or adolescent must feel comfortable, safe and understood. This type of trusting environment makes it much easier for the child to express his/her thoughts and feelings and to use the therapy in a helpful way.
